GOMONROVIA BY RIDE-HAILING

Those who live, work and are visiting Monrovia can take advantage of our enhanced public-private transit program through Lyft to take a ride anywhere in our service area at a reduced rate! Currently, you can take a regular Lyft ride (up to 4 passengers) for $3.00!

In an effort to flatten the curve and limit the spread of COVID-19, ride-hailing apps like Lyft and Uber have temporarily disabled the shared ride option.

How to Ride

  1. Download the Lyft app from your smartphone’s app store
    1. Don’t have a smartphone? Check out Lyft Concierge Service
  2. Sign up to create your account
    1. Please note that you must be 18 years of age to have a Lyft account and to ride alone in a Lyft vehicle! Minors must be accompanied by someone 18 years or older
  3. Open the app and click on your profile in the top left-hand corner of the homepage. Click on “Payment” and “Add Lyft Pass.” Enter promo code “GOMONROVIA”
    1. Be sure to enter promo code before requesting a ride. Once you’ve begun a ride, you won’t be able to apply a new promo code.
    2. Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)- If you require a WAV, then go to Lyft App Settings, and toggle on Wheelchair Access.
  4. On the app’s homepage, make sure your pickup location is correct and add your destination address.
    1. Select “Lyft” (up to 4 passengers) to ride for $3.00. Double check the cost before selecting Lyft
    2. Then click “Select Lyft.”
  5. Rides that change destination mid-ride, or riders who get picked up or dropped off outside of the coverage area will not quality for the GoMonrovia promo code and be subjected to the full fare.

How to Ride (No Smartphone)

The City is requiring advanced registration for passengers who do not own smartphones, and would like to book a ride over the telephone using the Lyft Concierge dispatch service.

How to Register

  1. Download and complete the Lyft Concierge Application, including credit card authorization form, and return to the Community Center. The Lyft Concierge Application is also available in Spanish.
  2. Once you have been notified that your application was approved, you may call (626) 358-3538 to book a ride with Lyft over the telephone.
  3. If you have a cell phone you will be sent text messages with the driver and vehicle information, the estimated time of arrival, and when the driver has arrived.
  4. Charges for your rides will be charged at the end of each month, and a monthly receipt for the amount charged to your credit card will be emailed to you.

Please note that trips may only be booked that start and end in the service area. Riders may receive warnings or be temporarily suspended from the Concierge service if abuse is suspected. For more information, please call (626) 256-8234.

Service Area

Our service area includes the City of Monrovia and Target in Duarte (a designated transfer point to Duarte Transit). We’ll also take passengers to medical appointments at pre-approved medical locations within three miles of the City’s limits, as well as the City of Hope.

FAQ’s

What is the difference between a Shared ride and a Classic Ride?

A “shared” ride on Lyft is meant for 1-2 passengers and the driver may pick-up or drop-off other passengers along your route. This may add a few minutes to your travel time. The pick-up and drop-off order of passengers can vary with every ride and is based on the most efficient route chosen by Lyft’s algorithm. This “smart” carpool method is a truly unique form of public transportation.

A “classic” ride can be used for up to 4 passengers. This option does not make any additional stops to pick up passengers along your route. If you are riding solo and prefer a direct route to your destination, or are in a hurry and need to head directly to your destination, we recommend selecting the “classic” ride option.

The promo code on my Lyft app has an expiration date. Is this program ending soon?

No, the program does not have a planned end date. These limits must appear on the back-end of the app, per the agreement between Lyft and the City. The GOMONROVIA promo code will renew itself on your app automatically on a monthly basis. Once you enter the code into your app the first time, you’re all set!

Why did my promo code work for previous rides, but not for this ride?

To ensure that your ride qualifies for the discounted rate, please remember the following:

The initial price when selecting Lyft is a quote dependent on where you get picked up and dropped off. If you are outside the service area, then you will get charged the full cost of the ride.

Promo code does not apply to rides with added stops.

Can I ride with Lyft if I don’t have a credit card or checking account?

Yes, you can purchase a pre-paid debit card to load funds onto the Lyft app. Pre-paid debit cards can be purchased at most grocery stores, convenience stores and pharmacies, including CVS, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, Walmart, etc.

Note that you cannot use a Lyft gift card with the GoMonrovia promo code, since there is only one discount permitted per ride.

What is I leave something important (e.g. keys, wallet, phone) in a Lyft?

The Lyft app keeps dropping me off at the wrong address for the Monrovia L-Line Metro Station. What address should I use?

To be dropped off at the correct address for the Monrovia L-Line Station (formerly Gold Line Station), please open your Lyft app and enter: “Monrovia Gold Line Station”

Or you may enter the address: 1671 South Primrose Avenue

Either of these will ensure you are dropped off at the Primrose drop-off location where you will have access to the board the L-Line.

Note that there is no passenger access to the Gold Line off of Duarte and Peck Road

Can I request a Lyft ride for a friend or family member?

You are welcome to request Lyft rides for someone else. Enter their address in the app or move the pin to their location and destination, then tap “Request Lyft.” Call or text your driver to gives them a heads up that they will be picking up your friend or family member and not you.

Please note that passengers must be 18 years or older to ride alone in a Lyft

Are children allowed to request Lyft rides?

Children (17 & under) are welcome to join an adult in a ride but are not permitted to ride alone in a Lyft vehicle.

Lyft drivers are happy to give children a ride as well as adults, as long as your children have the proper car seats that fit legal requirements in your state and city. Plan on providing your own car seat for children that require one.

Are pets allowed in Lyft rides?

Lyft loves your four-legged friends but not everyone is comfortable with having animals in their car. If you want to bring a pet in your ride, call your driver once they accept your ride request to tell them about your furry companion before they arrive. Tons of drivers are fine with animals, but some may have allergies or concerns about their vehicle. Always check with drivers first.

Service animals- Lyft’s policy is that drivers on the Lyft platform should reasonably accommodate passengers with services animals. Read their full service animal policy.
